On the minus side, spreading it in any useful way is a royal pain. In a normal playthrough, the only way to build an initial buffer of mushroom is to plant Mushroom Seeds on mud and let it spread.The ocean is just a bunch of sand, which can be corrupted and hallowed. Over spilled corruption/crimson or hallowed are very easily contained this way, on the surface. It is beneficial to have some neutral underground and cavern sections (mainly for fishing). Mushroom grass doesn't get corrupted, though mud near the corruption (or crimson) will still turn to dirt. On the minus side, spreading it in any useful way is a royal pain.
